Board Positions and Descriptions ’20 – ’21

President

Description:

The President oversees overall ISSA development and leadership by leading executive board meetings and delegating responsibilities. They ensure that members of the executive board are performing tasks adequately and on time. They create and approve GBM content, and head external relations and communications with GPS, I-House, ISP, other student organizations, and non-IS academic departments. They create a quarterly calendar of events at least one month before the succeeding quarter. The President is responsible for overseeing the budget, ISSA publicity, and the overall progression of ISSA’s development. The President is in charge of maintaining communications with all contacts at ISP and GPS.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate student attending UCSD for the entirety of the 2021-22 school year
  • Experienced student leader with background in leading student teams/collaborative projects and event planning
  • Experience in at least one other student organization
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Clear understanding of the International Studies Program, its relationships with the School of Global Policy and Strategy and International House, and other organizations on campus

Vice President

Description:

The Vice President is second in command to the President. They are the authority on ISSA’s internal affairs. Whereas the President is accountable for external relations, the Vice President is responsible for facilitating cohesion within the Executive team. This entails following up with individual Directors as well as mitigating conflicts and soliciting feedback from the team to ensure efficient team dynamics. As the primary operations manager, the Vice President must be logistical-minded and skilled at delegating tasks. The Vice President sources information and opportunities for ISSA members, including internship and scholarship information. They facilitate the internal ISSA Facebook group to ensure active participation.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate student attending UCSD for the entirety of the 2021-22 school year
  • Experience in at least one other student organization
  • Experience with event planning, organizing volunteer opportunities, and leading collaborative projects
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Clear understanding of the International Studies Program

Director of Administrative Affairs

Description:

The Director of Administrative Affairs manages the key secretarial functions of ISSA. They maintain the membership database, monitor member participation, draft weekly newsletters, takes minutes during e-board meetings, and manage the logistical duties for meetings and events, like booking rooms, preparing paperwork and forms, and tracking the ISSA budget. They create forms and surveys and maintain the ISSA email inbox and Google calendar. The Director of Administrative Affairs plays a key role in the execution of major ISSA events.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate student attending UCSD for the entirety of the 2021-22 school year
  • Experience in at least one other student organization
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Well-organized, self-starting, and responsible
  • Previous work experience in a secretarial or administrative position is preferred

Director of Mentorship

Description:

The Director of Mentorship facilitates the ISSA Undergraduate Mentorship Program (UMP) and Alumni initiatives/relations. For the UMP, the Mentorship Program Director manages underclassmen and upperclassmen pairings and is responsible for planning Mentorship Program socials. They monitor and update the UMP member list. Regarding alumni relations, the Director maintains a database of alumni and is responsible for planning events once a quarter, including professional development workshops and networking opportunities. They also work closely with the ISP office to maintain a database of alumni who are interested in participation. They work with the President to develop and structure both programs.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate student attending UCSD for the entirety of the 2021-22 school year
  • Experience in at least one other student organization
  • Innovative and proactive, able to independently initiate and work collaboratively to program events relevant to ISSA’s Mentorship Program and Alumni Outreach
  • Strong oral and written skills, ability to communicate professionally with many outside contacts
  • Previous participation in or management of mentorship programs is preferred

Director of Alumni Affairs

Description:

The Director of Alumni Relations is responsible for the implementation of alumni outreach programs and bridging the gap between ISSA members and alumni. They will expand and strengthen ISSA’s alumni network. They are responsible for organizing events and opportunities for alumni to get involved remotely. They will work closely with: the President to develop outreach initiatives, the Director of Public Relations for event marketing, the School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS), and the International Studies Program (ISP). They will also be working with students/former students to get in connection with alumni and with the ISSA board to develop and structure alumni events.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate student attending UCSD for the entirety of the 2021-22 school year
  • Experience in at least one other student organization
  • Previous experience networking with alumni preferred
  • Very communicative, innovative, and motivated to build the ISSA community
  • Strong grasp of networking tools such as LinkedIn and the ability to use them effectively
  • Willing to start conversations, build connections, and connect people to ISSA.

Director of Public Relations and Social Media

Description:

The Director of Public Relations creates marketing materials for ISSA GBMs, events, and programs. They effectively promote ISSA events on social media platforms, notably Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. They identify individuals and groups that would increase visibility of major ISSA events. The Director of Public Relations chiefly manages the ISSA website by updating and developing its content. They should be experienced in graphic design, website management, and photography. They work with the President to develop external relations.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate student attending UCSD for the entirety of the 2021-22 school year
  • Experience in at least one other student organization
  • Very creative, innovative, detail-oriented, and communicative
  • Strong writing skills and digital fluency
  • Strong grasp of social media tools and ability to use them effectively
  • Previous experience with graphic design, website design, and photography preferred

Director of Special Affairs

Description:

The Director of Special Affairs facilitates the execution of the big quarterly event (e.g. Social Science Career Night, Student Soundbites TEDx event) with member feedback, interests, and participation. They head the Events Committee and its meetings, encourage member participation, and act as a liaison between members and the Executive Board. They ensure consistent communication with other organizations, particularly when cooperating to host special events. The Director of Special Affairs works closely with the Director of Public Relations to effectively promote the events through appropriate channels.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate student attending UCSD for the entirety of the 2021-22 school year
  • Experience in at least one other student organization
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and a desire to build a strong ISSA community
  • Experience with event planning, organizing volunteer opportunities, and leading collaborative projects

Director of Membership

Description:

The Director of Membership is responsible for tracking membership status as well as the recruitment and retention of new members. They maintain records of student event attendance in order to alert members of Active Membership status, and take the lead in crafting an effective membership program by creating appropriate membership guidelines. Additionally, the Director of Membership heads the planning of social events to facilitate a welcoming community within ISSA. This includes brainstorming events activities, booking event locations, arranging food vendors, and promoting event attendance. The Director of Membership works closely with the Director of Administration and the Director of Public Relations to maximize engagement on events.

  • Undergraduate student attending UCSD for the entirety of the 2021-22 school year
  • Innovative and proactive, able to independently initiate and work collaboratively to program relevant events
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and a desire to build a strong ISSA community
  • Experience with event planning, organization, leading collaborative projects and experience in at least one other student organization is preferred
